Safeguarding focus – helping your child return to school after the summer holiday

Returning to school after a long summer holiday can bring a mixture of excitement, anticipation and anxiety. Additionally, if your child is starting a new school, these same feelings may be amplified.  A little preparation at home can help your child make the transition smoothly.

Re-establish routines: Aim to return to school-day bedtimes and morning routines, as soon as possible. Ensure your child gets enough sleep and has time for a calm breakfast before leaving home.

Talk positively about school: Make time to chat about returning, focusing on the people and activities your child enjoys. If they have worries, listen carefully and acknowledge their feelings rather than dismissing them. Reassure them that it is normal to feel nervous about a new term.

Prepare together: Involve your child in getting uniform, shoes, school equipment and lunches ready. Knowing that everything is organised can reduce morning stress and help build a sense of independence.

Keep goodbyes calm and confident: Children often take their emotional cues from adults. A warm, positive and predictable goodbye can help, even if your child is reluctant to separate.

Allow time to settle: The first few days may be tiring as your child adjusts to new routines, expectations and social experiences. Give them opportunities to relax and avoid overloading them with activities after school.

Most importantly, stay connected with your child. Ask open questions, such as “What was the best part of your day?” and give them time to talk. If worries persist or begin to affect sleep, mood or attendance, please contact the school. We are always happy to listen and work with families to help children feel safe, confident and ready to learn.
