Safeguarding focus – back to school online safety

As children return to school, they may begin to want to chat and play games with friends online. Whilst this can be a good way for children to develop friendships, it is vitally important that they are clear on the need to stay safe.

Chat through the following top tips with your children:

  • Keep personal information private. Never share your full name, address, school, passwords or phone number with people online.
  • Only talk to people you know. Be careful if someone you do not know sends you a message or asks to be your friend.
  • Think before you share. Photos, videos and messages can be copied or shared with other people.
  • Be kind online. Treat your friends with the same kindness and respect you would show them at school.
  • Tell a trusted adult. If something online makes you feel worried, uncomfortable or frightened, stop chatting and tell a parent, teacher or another trusted adult. You will not be in trouble for asking for help.
  • Remember: you can always say no. You never have to do something online just because someone asks you to.
